THE CHOCTAW TRIBE

Eight soldiers from the Choctaw tribe were chosen to be the first “code talkers.” To send a message, one Choctaw would translate the message into his language and say the message across the telephone to another Choctaw, who would translate it back into English. The Choctaws were first used in October 1917, allowing American soldiers to make a surprise attack on German positions. The Choctaw code talkers played an important role in turning back a major German offensive in 1918. Later, German officers admitted that their telephone tapping was rendered useless by the Choctaws.
